WHAT IS "MEMORY?"
Memory can be divided into short-term memory, active working memory and long-term memory:
- Short-term memory allows for the brief retention (2-3 seconds) of new information.
- Long-term memory is more or less the warehouse for permanent storage.
- Active working memory is like a meeting place where short-term and long-term memory can get together, e.g., remembering the question you were just asked while trying to search your long-term memory for the answer.
All of these memory systems work together to allow the mind to learn. More strenuous and extensive use of memory is required for school success than is needed in virtually any career you can name. Because a memory problem can have a profound impact on school performance it can affect all other life decisions, such as college and career choices.
